چکیده

* Formerly with Lucent Technologies/Agere Systems (Breinigsville, PA) Abstract Research on micromachines or MEMS technology has been ongoing for more than a decade. Early work focused on biomedical, printing and airbag applications. Only recently has this technology been applied to telecommunications networks. This new micro-optics technology, known as Optical MEMS, is enabling a new generation of optical components to facilitate deployment of the “all optical network”. Optical MEMS are miniature optical elements (such as micro mirrors) capable of moving and managing light. Because these devices steer light beams – not electrons, they are bit rate, wavelength (channel) and protocol independent. This paper will discuss the current trends in Optical MEMS research. It will discuss several telecommunications applications including optical switching, dynamic gain equalization, variable optical attenuation and dynamic add/drop multiplexing. The author will discuss some of the many challenges in implementing MEMS in field grade optical components and review some of the competing technologies. Finally, future directions in MEMS research will be discussed -especially in the area of optical switching; the so-called “killer” MEMS application.

Devices Based on Co-Integrated MEMS Actuators and Optical Waveguide: A Review

The convergence of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and optics was, at the end of the last century, a fertile ground for a new breed of technological and scientific achievements. The weightlessness of light has been identified very early as a key advantage for micro-actuator application, giving rise to optical free-space MEMS devices. In parallel to these developments, the past 20 years ...

High-Q MEMS Resonators for Laser Beam Scanning Displays

This paper reports on design, fabrication and characterization of high-Q MEMS resonators to be used in optical applications like laser displays and LIDAR range sensors. Stacked vertical comb drives for electrostatic actuation of single-axis scanners and biaxial MEMS mirrors were realized in a dual layer polysilicon SOI process. High Q-factors up to 145,000 have been achieved applying wafer leve...

162: Principles of MEMS

MEMS is an acronym for Microelectro Mechanical Systems, it defines mechanical structures fabricated with IC processing on (most often) silicon wafers. In Europe, MEMS is labeled Microsystems and in Japan it is labeled Micromachines. The term MEMS evolved in the United States in the 1990s. Prior to that period the technology was labeled silicon micromachining . MEMS defines the technology; not s...

Second Order Sliding Mode Observer-Based Control for Uncertain Nonlinear MEMS Optical Switch

This paper studies theuncertain nonlinear dynamics of a MEMS optical switch addressing electrical, mechanical and optical subsystems. Recently, MEMS optical switch has had significant merits in reliability, control voltage requirements and power consumption. However, an inherent weakness in designing control for such systems is unavailability of switch position information at all times due to t...
